Rabbi Stephanie Alexander received her undergraduate degree, a B.S. in Psychology with honors in Jewish studies, from Tulane University in New Orleans.  She earned her ordination, as well as a Masters degree in Hebrew Literature and Religious Education, from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 2003.

Her rabbinic thesis was entitled:  “Standing at the Altar:  Re-imagining the Significance of Bar/Bat Mitzvah.”  After her ordination, Rabbi Alexander served as an Assistant Rabbi at Temple Isaiah in Lexington, MA (799 families).

She then worked for a year as the Regional Director of Youth and Informal Education for the URJ’s Midwest Council before taking a solo pulpit at Temple Beth El in Dubuque, Iowa, where she served for three years before moving to the Lowcountry.  During that same time, she served as an Adjunct Professor at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and was the Midrasha Coordinator for high school age children at Temple Judah in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Throughout her training and practice as a rabbi and educator, Rabbi Alexander has sought out institutions that value creativity in programming–from an experimental Shabbat family school to multi-generational social justice organizing, to a supplemental congregational high school program over 120 teenagers strong.  Rabbi Alexander lives in Charleston with her husband, Rabbi Aaron Sherman, and their son, Eli.
