SUMMARY:From Boston to Southern California: Journey Towards Our Future
DESCRIPTION:From Boston to Southern California: Journey Towards Our Future \n\n2013 Convention Committee\n \nReception\nsponsored by IsramWorld\nThe simple act of conversation can be transformational when people speak their authentic truth\, listen deeply\, make space for reflection\, and allow what is being said to touch their minds and hearts. And in a world where speed\, multi-tasking\, and declarations from experts seem to dominate\, this kind of conversation is quickly becoming the exception rather than the rule. Join your colleagues for a dynamic and interactive session in which you will have a chance to sit with colleagues and explore the question\, “What is it you have a hunger to learn\, experience\, experiment with or accomplish in the coming 5-10 years that would add impact and meaning to your rabbinate and inspiration to your Jewish journey?.” The session will demonstrate specific small and large group methods designed to connect people in meaningful conversations. The insights generated from this session will be used to shape the program for the 2013 Convention.

SUMMARY:Judaism Confronting Science
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Phil Cohen. Dr. Jonathan Crane\, Geoffery Mitelman\n\nFor centuries Judaism understood science to be a partner. Jewish thinkers did not see a contradiction between science and Torah. It is Norbert Samuelson’s contention in his book Jewish Faith and Modern Science that\, for various historical and philosophical reasons\, that synthesis has been left behind. He further argues that Jews need to reconceive that synthesis for the future. In this session three Reform rabbis will discuss Samuelson’s thesis. Their discussion will come from Samuelson’s book\, as well as from the work they did in their contributions to the recently published edition of the CCAR Journal (Winter 2012)\, devoted to the topic of Judaism and science. This session will provide participants with the opportunity to engage in this important intellectual and spiritual issue. Are the demands of science so important as to threaten the integrity of the Jewish tradition if an acceptable intellectual approach is not found?

SUMMARY:Ahad Ha'Am and the Reform Movement: On the Prospects for Modern Judaism (Taught in Hebrew)
DESCRIPTION:Michael Marmur\n\nIn this session\, to be taught in Hebrew\, we will consider some aspects of Ahad Ha’am’s complex relationship with Reform Judaism\, focusing in particular on a fascinating and little-known exchange between the father of cultural Zionism\, Ahad Ha’am (Asher Ginsberg\, 1856-1927) and David Neumark (1866-1924)\, a professor of philosophy at the Hebrew Union College. At stake is the question of whether a modern Judaism incorporating both national and credal dimensions is possible.

SUMMARY:The Yom Kippur Afternoon Experience: More Than Waiting to Eat
DESCRIPTION:Leon Morris and Eddie Goldberg with Janet Marder\, Shelly Marder\, Elaine Zecher and Peter Berg\n\n\nThrough the years\, many congregations have taken the opportunity to use creative endeavors at this point in the day\, such as healing services\, poetry readings\, and musical interludes. Other congregations have chosen to harken back to the Avodah service\, which others are trying to figure out what to do. We’ve explored these questions and look forward to a robust discussion and sharing of experiences and ideas about how to plan for this pinnacle moment of the Yom Kippur experience\, as we also offer a preview of our thoughts and direction vis-à-vis the new machzor.

SUMMARY:Consensus Decision-Making: Pursuing Peace in Our Leadership & Governance
DESCRIPTION:Larry Dressler and Sam Joseph \n\nAs leaders\, tired of the meeting after the meeting in the parking lot? Frustrated by the ‘after-meeting’ in the hallway? The primary goal of the session is how to use consensus decision-making\, a cooperative\, non-coercive form of decision-making in the setting of Jewish institutions and organizations. \nThis session with be the perfect mix of theory and practice. It will be interactive and draw upon the experiences of the participants and practitioners in the field. By the completion of this workshop\, participants will know about how to use consensus decision-making and action steps toward its implementation in their home setting. \nSome of the issues we will tackle include group dynamics\, especially in Jewish settings\, trust and respect\, unity of purpose\, self-empowerment\, patience\, commitment\, majority rule and competition\, cooperation and formal consensus.

SUMMARY:Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions of a Team
DESCRIPTION:Russ Sabia \n \nFor all the talk about the importance of teamwork by leaders\, it is largely untapped and unrealized in most organizations. \nMany organizations – filled with talented\, committed people – struggle to fulfill their full promise and find themselves bogged down by excessive interpersonal politics and confusion about what is really important. As a result\, things take much longer to get done\, results are much harder to accomplish\, and real dollar costs increase. \nAt its root\, this problem most often stems from leadership teams that lack cohesion and alignment\, and that fall victim to one or more of the Five Dysfunctions of Teams. \nIn this session\, learn about the five most common and destructive pitfalls of leadership teams\, and how trust\, conflict\, commitment\, and accountability all impact results. Discover practical and proven strategies to overcome these common dysfunctions and explore how leadership teams can become more effective by minimizing the politics\, confusion\, and unproductive behavior that prevent so many organizations from realizing their potential. \nJoin Russ Sabia\, Principal Consultant at The Table Group\, for this engaging discussion based on Patrick Lencioni’s best-selling book\, The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team.

SUMMARY:Bringing Shavat Vayinafash into the Everyday
DESCRIPTION:Larry Dressler \nOne of the paradoxes of the rabbinate is that we who are most devoted to repairing the world often find ourselves in a state of disrepair. Too often we and our institutions get caught up in a larger culture that values speed\, multi-tasking and results. We learn to “cope” with or suppress our experience of feeling overworked\, overcommitted\, and overwhelmed\, often at a personal cost. In this session we will use dialogue\, poetry\, and embodied practices to explore the small yet profound ways in which we can regularly “re-soul” — restore a sense of wonder\, freshness\, and wholeness to our sacred work.

SUMMARY:Teaching Hebrew: Raising the Bar
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Vardit Ringvald \nThe impact of the Hebrew language on our children’s sense of self is increasingly in the spotlight. What a different picture when they approach their Bar/Bat Mitzvah training with the organic connection to ancient texts and Israeli culture that Hebrew gives them! To maximize the level of our students’ Hebrew in Synagogue schools\, we need to build a field of professionals who understand language acquisition and have the pedagogical skills to incorporate this understanding into their classroom activities. Hebrew at the Center (HATC). has worked with day schools\, public schools\, summer camps\, afterschool programs\, and regional groups of schools throughout North America\, serving a wide range of Jewish expression and practice. Founding Senior Academic Advisor Dr. Vardit Ringvald will describe how HATC prepares educators to make informed decisions that foster their learners’ abilities to internalize the Hebrew language\, transforming it into a powerful tool for shaping and strenthening Jewish identity in religious school settings.

SUMMARY:Music and the Interiority Complex
DESCRIPTION:Josh Jacobson \nPre-registration is required. Session is capped at 40 participants. \nWe will struggle with some of these questions: Can music create holiness? How? What musical experiences connect us to our community? What musical experiences connect us to our inner selves\, to God? Is there a role for “classical music” in the synagogue? Do we need a professional musician in the synagogue? Does simple music generate simple faith? Why do I have my most spiritual experiences in Symphony Hall and not in the synagogue? \n  \nPlease read the following articles in advance of this session: \nThe Music You Won’t Hear on Rosh Hashana \nI Dread Going to Shul \nA Composer’s View of Temple Music \nNew Wings for Our Prayers \n

SUMMARY:The Child in the Halakhah (Freehof Institute for Progressive Halakhah)
DESCRIPTION:Walter Jacobs\, Ruth Langer\, Brian Stoller \nThe program will discuss “The Child in the Halakhah\,” an area rather neglected by the Traditions. Although the transition to being an adult was discussed in detail in rabbinic literature\, this dealt almost exclusively with physical changes. The intellectual development of children was noted\, but only in random comments and without any thorough discussion. Nor was any attention given to adolescence\, a term which began to be used at the beginning of the twentieth century. Our presenters will mix perspectives on current issues with their historical background. \n\nBrian Stoller: “The Changing Age of Responsibility”\nDr. Walter Jacob: “The Juvenile Delinquent”\nDr. Ruth Langer: “The Parental Blessing”

SUMMARY:Sea Sick on the Love Boat: Liquid Modernity\, Fluid Identity and Nautical Metaphors
DESCRIPTION:Michael Marmur \nIn this session we will consider themes of liquidity\, fluidity and water in Jewish and Western traditions. In particular\, a tradition from Sifrei Deuteronomy concerning peoplehood will be studied. Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of Liquid Modernity will also be considered. Our question is: how should we respond to a fluid reality? Go with the flow? Tell the tide to turn? Learn how to surf? Buy a submarine?

SUMMARY:The Best Practice of Mentors and Mentees
DESCRIPTION:Sam Joseph \n\nThere are mainly four types of mentors: \n\nCareer Guide — promotes development through career guidance\, counseling and visibility;\nInformation Source — provides information about formal and informal expectations;\nFriend — interacts with the mentee socially and provides information about people; and\nIntellectual Guide — promotes an equal relationship\, collaborates on research projects and provides constructive feedback and criticism.\n\nThe mentor-mentee relationship in the rabbinate could intersect with all four types above. \nThis session will bring the most recent research into the practice of mentoring and help colleagues learn how to have an engaging mentoring relationship and a generative one. The rabbinate can be growthful and richer because of such.
