SUMMARY:Finding Our Way to the God of Torah
DESCRIPTION:Rachel Timoner \nLightning on the mountain. Plagues as punishment. War and bloodshed. The God of Torah can be difficult to relate to\, even alienating\, for our congregants\, and for us. How might we connect our own spiritual practices and beliefs with this God? Join with Rabbi Rachel Timoner of Leo Baeck Temple in Los Angeles and author of Breath of Life: God as Spirit in Judaism\, as she takes you on a journey through Torah to find a new look at the God within the scroll. Tracing ruach through its 378 appearances in Tanach\, Timoner finds that God shows up as ruach while creating the world\, endowing humans with understanding\, and urging us to redeem our world. Be part of this conversation and discover a God you just might relate to.

SUMMARY:Opening the Gates to Bar and Bat Mitzvah
DESCRIPTION:Arlene Remz \nFor the past eight years\, Gateways: Access to Jewish Education\, Boston’s central address for Jewish special education\, has prepared dozens of youngsters with disabilities for Bar and Bat Mitzvah. Young adults have been able to enjoy the Jewish rite-of-passage that only a few short years ago would likely have been denied them. This presentation will take you through several of our “gates” to becoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah–from students with autism who learn to read Hebrew and chant from the Torah using a specialized multi-sensory approach\, to students who are non-verbal who recite the blessings by activating a computer\, to students who are deaf and sign both the prayers and D’var Torah. Learn ways to work with special needs children\, so that each child will celebrate his or her Bar or Bat Mitzvah “each according to their way.”

SUMMARY:Enhancing Prayer with Technology
DESCRIPTION:Peter Levi\, Dan Medwin\, Ron Segal\n\nFrom stone tablets\, to parchment\, to bound and printed books\, Jews have been regular adopters of new technology for the purposes of study and worship.  Come learn the newest tools to more deeply engage our members in prayer and liturgy\, and to enhance our capabilities as facilitators of worship. \n\nVisual T’filah allows the possibility of embracing visual imagery and “midrash” in worship settings\, and lifts the faces and voices of the community.  Learn from colleagues about how it is being used in the field and how to bring it to your community.  We will also engage in a broader conversation about the power of visual imagery to convey ideas and emotions\, and how its use can positively effect our rabbinates.\niT’filah: The Mishkan T’filah app\, represents a significant step forward in the use of technology and its benefits for prayer.  Learn about its features and how to facilitate prayer and study through its offerings.  Also\, get a “sneak peek” at some of the ideas in consideration for future versions of the app\, and contribute your own ideas.

DESCRIPTION:Peter Berg\, Eddie Goldberg\, Janet Marder\, Shelly Marder\, Leon Morris\, Elaine Zecher \nChet\, averah\, pesha\, and avon are all Hebrew words that connote the behaviors we address when we gather on the High Holy Days. SUMMARY:Moses & Hasidism: Reflections on Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Or Rose \nLike so many interpreters before and after them\, the early Hasidic masters engage the figure of Moses in different ways as they seek to articulate their own visions of Jewish communal leadership. When does Moses—as presented in both biblical and post-biblical sources—serve as a positive or negative model for these mystical exegetes and why? What might we learn from these Hasidic interpretations in our own development as religious leaders?

SUMMARY:The Foundations of Social Media for Rabbis
DESCRIPTION:Lisa Colton \nSocial media is powerfully influencing the way individuals engage and organizations operate. This democratization of access to information\, support for relationships and empowerment of individuals is great news for the Jewish community\, but it does require that our organizations and leadership adjust their approach for this new landscape. Join us to learn a bit of theory and many practical examples that Rabbis can use to achieve success online and in-person\, today and into the future.

SUMMARY:Pre-Marital Counseling
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Paula Brody \nMost couples will seek out a clergy connection before their marriage. For interfaith couples\, this interaction is often pivotal. How can clergy turn pre-marital meetings\, whether with in-marrying or intermarrying couples\, into opportunities for meaningful Jewish engagement\, nurturing their Jewish choices and solidifying their commitment to creating a Jewish home for their family? This workshop will provide some useful tools to strengthen couples’ communication around faith issues enabling each partner to untangle the complicated threads that connect them to their family and religious background. The workshop will introduce clergy to the couples communication exercises and wedding planning suggestions available in the forthcoming CCAR publication\, Strengthening Communication and Supporting Jewish Choices: A Pre-Marital Counseling Guide for Clergy written by Dr. Paula Brody\, LICSW\, Ed.D.\, Director of the Outreach Training Institute\, Reform Jewish Outreach Boston\, who will be leading this session.

SUMMARY:Making the Most of the “Wet Hair Moment:” Orchestrating a Meaningful Immersion Experience For Your Conversion Candidate
DESCRIPTION:Lisa Berman \nThis workshop will explore a variety of questions about the conversion immersion experience.  How do conversion candidates prepare for the actual immersion?  Is it appropriate for family and friends to attend and what is their role?  How does the clergy’s role change at the time of the immersion?  This workshop illuminates the hopes and anxieties of all participants at a conversion immersion\, highlighting the coordination between clergy and the mikveh guide\, and offering ways to engage family and friends.  This workshop will also offer tools for sanctifying the important moment that occurs when the “new Jew” has emerged from the water\, dressed and is greeted by the clergy\, family and friends.  Participants in this session will learn about various meaningful and engaging rituals that can be utilized to welcome and support the individual as he/she becomes a part of the Jewish people.

SUMMARY:Liturgical Uses of Poetry: Sometimes It Works\, Sometimes It Doesn't
DESCRIPTION:Shelly Marder and Janet Marder with Peter Berg\, Eddie Goldberg\, Leon Morris\, and Elaine Zecher \nMany of us use poetry in our services. Poetry has the power to take us to new heights. Whether it can help us ascend to heaven is not a guarantee though – not every poem is a prayer. How do we think about what works well in a prayer context? As we have explored different poetry in the process of creating the new machzor\, let us share with you our thinking about what has made it on to the page and what hasn’t. We’ll study and analyze a few examples together.
