SUMMARY:Revolutionary Lessons from Boston
DESCRIPTION:Revolutionary Lessons from Boston\n\n\nDr. Jonathan Sarna & Barry Shrage\nWe will begin the conference with a dialogue between Dr. Jonathan Sarna\, a leading scholar of American Jewish history\, and Barry Shrage\, the innovative President of Combined Jewish Philanthropies (Boston’s Jewish Federation). We will explore what has transformed the Boston Jewish community and how that has been shaped through its unique history and present day culture. Dr. Sarna and Mr. Shrage will speak about the seeds of change in the Boston Jewish community (with regard to interfaith relationships\, community organizing and Jewish education to name a few areas) and they will lead us through an inquiry as to what is central to inspiring Jewish community and growing our own communities with meaning and purpose.\n\nView the video from this session

SUMMARY:Israel in Context: What Zionist Thinkers Say to Us Today
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Aaron Panken \nZionism faces numerous challenges in the contemporary American Reform context. Recent articles even claim that American rabbinical students are beginning to exhibit less connection to the Jewish State\, let alone our lay leaders. Dual loyalties\, dual states and dueling theologies are just a few of the many complications that confront those who turn their minds to this important issue. Through reading a series of early and more recent Zionist thinkers\, we will begin to address the question of where Israel fits as a component of American Reform Jewish identity\, and consider what we might do in coming years to address the challenges of contemporary Zionism in our congregations and communities. Texts will be in Hebrew and English\, with translations available where necessary.

SUMMARY:Defanging the Birkat HaMinim (Part II)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ruth Langer\nA continuation of the morning session.\n\nThe infamous twelfth benediction of the weekday amidah apparently cursed Christians explicitly in its early medieval forms and implicitly in its high European medieval forms. Christians were aware of this and censored the text\, most formally and widely from the 1550s on. This all day Beit Midrash session will examine the ways that Jews have interpreted this prayer\, paying particular attention to the ways that modern Jews have understood and adapted the text.

SUMMARY:Israel in Text: From the Land of Milk and Honey to Coercing Aliyah
DESCRIPTION: Dr. Aaron Panken\n\nBiblical and Rabbinic texts create a strong foundation for a longing for Zion that inspired later thinkers\, including influencing many early Zionists as they crafted a Jewish national ideology. In this session\, we will delve into a selection of core primary rabbinic sources that informed our people’s image of and connection with the Land of Israel\, with a special eye toward applicability to the contemporary American Reform Jewish scene. Texts will be in Hebrew\, with translations available.

SUMMARY:What We Can Learn From Hasidic Religious Practice: Hasidic Prayer and Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nehemiah Polen \nEarly Hasidic masters taught that prayer is an opportunity to focus on Divine unity and the dissolution of the ego. At the same time\, they practiced intercessory prayer and petitionary prayer. Our session will explore how the two modalities of quietistic and activist prayer coexisted and influenced each other. We will look at what we can learn from Hasidic teachers for our lives. Texts will be in Hebrew and English.
