SUMMARY:Opening the Gates to Bar and Bat Mitzvah
DESCRIPTION:Arlene Remz \nFor the past eight years\, Gateways: Access to Jewish Education\, Boston’s central address for Jewish special education\, has prepared dozens of youngsters with disabilities for Bar and Bat Mitzvah. Young adults have been able to enjoy the Jewish rite-of-passage that only a few short years ago would likely have been denied them. This presentation will take you through several of our “gates” to becoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah–from students with autism who learn to read Hebrew and chant from the Torah using a specialized multi-sensory approach\, to students who are non-verbal who recite the blessings by activating a computer\, to students who are deaf and sign both the prayers and D’var Torah. Learn ways to work with special needs children\, so that each child will celebrate his or her Bar or Bat Mitzvah “each according to their way.”

DESCRIPTION:Peter Levi\, Dan Medwin\, Ron Segal\n\nFrom stone tablets\, to parchment\, to bound and printed books\, Jews have been regular adopters of new technology for the purposes of study and worship.  Come learn the newest tools to more deeply engage our members in prayer and liturgy\, and to enhance our capabilities as facilitators of worship. \n\nVisual T’filah allows the possibility of embracing visual imagery and “midrash” in worship settings\, and lifts the faces and voices of the community.  Learn from colleagues about how it is being used in the field and how to bring it to your community.  We will also engage in a broader conversation about the power of visual imagery to convey ideas and emotions\, and how its use can positively effect our rabbinates.\niT’filah: The Mishkan T’filah app\, represents a significant step forward in the use of technology and its benefits for prayer.  Learn about its features and how to facilitate prayer and study through its offerings.  Also\, get a “sneak peek” at some of the ideas in consideration for future versions of the app\, and contribute your own ideas.
